What is Antikythera Mechanism and its History
The Antikythera mechanism is the oldest analog computer. This ancient computer was recovered from a shipwreck in July 1901, off the coast of Antikythera, a Greek Island. It is believed that this instrument was designed and constructed by Greek scientists. It is estimated that this ancient computer is nearly 2000 years old (87 BC).Antikythera Mechanism Uses
The Antikythera mechanism was mainly used to predict astronomical positions and eclipses for calendar and astrological purposes decades in advance. It was also used to calculate the ancient Olympic Games timing and to track the metonic calendar. * It is interesting to note that the Antikythera mechanism was not considered important until 75 years after its discovery.* According to researchers the inventor of Antikythera mechanism and the inventor of trigonometry was the same person - Hipparchus.
Antikythera Mechanism - Structure and Working
* The antikythera mechanism was a single piece when it was recovered from the Mediterranean, but it soon broke into three major parts.* A hand crank was used to operate the antikythera mechanism. The hand crank was linked to the largest gear via a Crown gear.
* Correct calendar date was indicated by the date pointer as it was moved by the gear.
* The front part of the antikythera mechanism had a large dial containing pointers. These pointers were used to show the positions of the sun and the moon in the zodiac.
* It also had a half silvered ball for displaying lunar phases.
* The mechanism also contained two large dials on the back side of it that had many moving pointers to provide accurate information related to the movement of astronomical bodies and time calculations.
So it is Clear that antikythera mechanism was an indigenius mechanism that shows the knowledge of ancient Greeks.
