International Space Station (ISS) is the biggest man made object in the space. The ISS has been described as the most expensive single object ever built. In 2010 its cost was expected to be 150 billion dollars.
The International Space Station (ISS) is a space station in low Earth orbit. The ISS program is a joint project between 5 participating space agencies of united states, Russia, Japan, Europe and Canada.
The space station is divided into two sections, the Russian orbital segment (ROS) and the United States Orbital Segment (USOS).
The Russian Orbital segment is operated by Russia while the United States orbital segment is shared by many nations.
The international Space Station was originally intended to be a laboratory, observatory and factory while providing transportation and maintenance. It was also thought that the station could also be used as a low Earth orbit staging base for possible future missions, to the moon, Mars and asteroids.
You can see the space station flying over your home, sometimes just by looking up in the sky at dawn or dusk.
The mass of the Space Station is nearly 420 Thousand kilograms. The living and working space in the international Space Station is larger than a six bedroom house. It has all the basic facilities that are required to stay here for months. The station has six sleeping quarters, two bathrooms, a gym and a 360 degrees view Bay window.
The International Space Station makes 16 orbits of Earth in every 24 hours. So the persons in ISS experience 16 sunrises and sunsets in these 24 hours. The station is revolving around the earth, at a speed of 5 miles per second. Because of its high speed, it takes only 90 minutes to complete one Revolution around the earth.
ISS has been continuously occupied since November 2000. An International crew of 6 people live and work on the station. 230 individuals from 18 countries have visited the ISS. You will find it interesting that 6 spaceships can be connected to the Space Station at once. Astronauts and cosmonauts have conducted more than 205 spacewalks for space station construction, maintenance and repair since December 1998.
Do you know that gravity at the altitude of the international Space Station is nearly 90% as strong as at Earth's surface, but then why there is a condition of weightlessness in The Space Station. The reason behind this is, the objects in the orbit are in a continuous state of free fall and this free fall results in an apparent state of weightlessness in The Space Station.
The International Space Station is a third generation modular Space Station. The modular structure of the Space Station gives it a great flexibility by allowing new modules to be added to or removed from the existing structure. Let me tell you that, oxygen in the ISS comes from a process called electrolysis. In this process electric current is used to split water molecules into hydrogen and Oxygen gas. The current required for this is generated from the solar panels used on the Space Station.
All the astronauts abode the ISS must workout at least 2 hours a day to maintain normal Earth- based bodily health, as the human body tends to lose muscle and bone mass in Zero Gravity environments.
The International Space Station is the third brightest object in the night sky after the moon and Venus. Although you can Find it in the sky with your naked eyes but if you can not find it then you can take the help of NASA's service. NASA provides a service called 'spot the station' that texts you when and where it will pass over your location.
Now I am going to Tell you something very interesting about the International Space Station. Although the Space Station is very big but it has only two bathrooms. The urine of both, the crew members and laboratory animals is filtered back into the stations drinking water supply.
So these were some amazing facts about the International Space station.
