It was previously believed that the left or right hemisphere of our brain is responsible for determining the dominant hand even before we are born. But later in a study done in 2017 it was found that it has nothing to do with the brain. Actually answer to this lies in our spinal cord. According to the research, before the brain starts controlling the body movement, it is determined in the womb whether the child would be left-handed or right-handed. Let's now understand how it happens. There is an area called motor cortex in the brain which controls arm and hand movements. This motor cortex sends Signal to the spinal cord and the signal is translated into a motion. Here it is to be noted that the motor cortex of brain and the spinal cord are not connected up until about 15 weeks of pregnancy. But the baby starts to show signals of dominant hand in the womb before 15 weeks of pregnancy. It has been observed that babies tend to suck either their right or left thumb from week 13 in the womb. It clearly indicates that the brain is not responsible for deciding left handedness or right handedness as it is not connected to the spinal cord up until 15 weeks of pregnancy. It means, the spinal cord decides the hand preference. During a study a team analyzed the gene expression in the spinal cord. The study was conducted during the 8th 12th week of pregnancy. It was found that there was significant difference between left and right handedness in the segments of the spinal cord which is responsible for controlling arm and leg movement. String theory deals with how these strings propagate through space and how do they interact with each other. According to the string theory all fundamental particles are actually tiny vibrating loops of string. Various properties of particles like mass and charge are determined by the vibrations of the one dimensional string like entities. As Albert Einstein described gravity using the general theory of relativity but the general theory of relativity is formulated within the framework of classical physics. According to Einstein's general theory of relativity, gravity is the distortion of space-time caused by the presence of matter. So a quantum theory of gravity was needed in order to reconcile general relativity with the principle of quantum mechanics. String theory can help us here. Actually string theory potentially provides a unified description of gravity and particle physics. It is a self contained mathematical model that describes all fundamental forces and forms of matter. So we can say that string theory is a candidate for a theory of everything. Now let’s get an idea about how small are the strings in string theory.

Actually a string is of the order of 10^-33. This number is so small that just by staring at this number you won’t get the idea. So let me make it simple for you with an analogy. Let’s assume an atom were magnified, to the size of the whole observable Universe, then a String would be the size of a tree!!! Now let me do one more comparison to make it more clear. This time I'll compare the size of an electron with the size of a string. So, if we increase the size of an electron equal to the size of the Earth, then a string would not be bigger than just a 3 storey building.

Whenever you feel scared, you are either afraid of thinking about the future or whatever has happened to you in the past. So fear is always in the past or future. In the present moment, there is only life, No Fear !!! Let me explain it with the help of an example. Even if you are fighting with someone, you will not be afraid. Because at that time your full focus will be on fighting. But as soon as you shift your focus from present moment to past or future and start thinking, you feel scared. You may think, what will happen to my family, what will happen to my children, if I got hurt or die in the fight. In this way, as soon as your attention is removed from your present task which is fighting, your mind gets filled with worries and fears. And when this happens, your focus is not on fighting and your chances of losing the battle are increased. Thus, only by living in the present moment, our fear is gone.

Now I will tell you about the second cause of fear.

2. Your desires and attachments

No matter what kind of fear you have, it is the result of your desires in some form or the other. If you have desire to live, then there will definitely be the fear of death. Most people will agree that the biggest fear is the fear of death. You must have seen that the person who is not afraid of dying, has nothing to lose and has no desires, can not be frightened by anything. Only a single thought that whatever is happening is temporary and one day we are going to die, will reduce your fear to a great extent. When you feel afraid, you need to notice that you must be clinging or attached to some person or object. We do not want to leave that thing or person under any circumstances. And this attachment causes our fear. If you could remove yourself from these attachments and desires somehow, you will find that you have overcome your fear at that moment.

So we have seen that if we have to overcome any kind of fear, then we have to take care of only two things. The first is to practice living only and only in the present moment without worrying about the past and future. And second, whenever you are afraid, pay attention what desires and attachments are causing it. You will get your answer.

You can easily understand, how a person cannot respond to its surroundings when he or she is unconscious or in other words unaware. Here it is a very important to note that consciousness and intelligence are two different things. A super intelligent robot or a supercomputer can be more intelligent in terms of analytical skills, memory, ability to predict on the basis of large amounts of data provided to it and in many other ways but is not at all conscious about its own existence. Even a tree or insect is far more conscious than the most advanced supercomputer that we have.

According to researchers, even a sophisticated simulation of human brain running on a digital computer cannot be conscious. We can never create a conscious computer just by programming the computer for consciousness. it would just be simply a computer doing a task for which it has been programmed, but completely unaware of its own existence.

It is similar to the fact that just by simulating the immense gravitational pull of a black hole on a computer does not actually deform the space time fabric around the computer. But Harvard scientists think that they might be very close to pinpoint the location of consciousness in our brain.

According to researcher Michael Fox from the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre at Harvard Medical School- "For the first time, we have found a connection between the brainstem region involved in arousal and regions involved in awareness, two prerequisites for consciousness". So arousal and awareness are two critical components of consciousness. Researchers have shown that arousal is likely regulated by brainstem which is the portion of the brain that links up with spinal cord. They have found two cortex regions in the brain that seems to work together to form consciousness. Although scientists are working hard but still a lot needs to done in this area to uncover all the mysteries of consciousness.
